Why Did I Sell Spokane Falls, ca. 1910.

One handwritten manuscript "Why Did I Sell Spokane Falls" by Mrs. E. R. Bailey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Downing. This manuscript may have actually been written by someone else, though it is about Babe Downing. The manuscript talks about the arrival of J. J. Downing, his wife and daughter, "Babe," who was the first white child in the region. According to the manuscript, the Downings arrived in 1870 along with Downing's partner, S. B. Scranton and started a sawmill. They sold their claim to a man named Benjamin, who did not pay the entire sum, so they took it over and then sold it to James Glover. There is a discussion in Durham's History of the City of Spokane about this manuscript and its inaccuracies, particularly the date of their arrival.
